LA HISTORIA DEL PICKLEBALL
El Pickleball fue creado en los Estados Unidos durante el verano de 1965 en Bainbridge Island, cerca de Seattle, en el Estado de Washington. Fue desarrollado por el congresista estadounidense Joel Pritchard, y por Bill Bell, Jordania Steranka y Barney McCallum. Su intención al crear el Pickleball era diseñar un nuevo deporte que fuese divertido, desafiante y que todo el mundo lo pudiese jugar. Empezaron poniendo la red a 1´50 m y luego a 91 cm.

En los primeros años, el Pickleball fue practicado por las familias en sus patios traseros en una superficie dura, en la calle o en cualquier otro lugar en el que podían encontrar una superficie plana. A medida que el deporte fue creciendo durante la década de los ’70, pasó de ser una actividad originariamente familiar a un deporte de raqueta con unas reglas formales. Ahora el Pickleball se juega en las escuelas, clubes deportivos y centros de polideportivos a lo largo de los Estados Unidos, Canadá, España y cada vez más en otros países como Chile, Argentina y Uruguay.

De acuerdo a la información facilitada a CMDsport por la Asociación Española de Pickleball, en los últimos cinco años, el número de jugadores de este deporte en Estados Unidos se ha incrementado en un 35%, habiendo a cierre de 2018 un total de 3,3 millones de jugadores en el país. Con esta evolución, se habría convertido en el deporte con mayor crecimiento de usuarios en todo Estados Unidos en los últimos años.
